About James Detling

DETLING RUNNING FOR JUVENILE/PROBATE COURT JUDGE

Greenville attorney James (Jim) S. Detling has filed a petition to run as a Republican candidate for the Darke County Juvenile/Probate Court Judge, for the unexpired term of Judge Michael D. McClurg. The Primary is March 6, 2012.

Detling was raised on a farm in northern Darke County and attended Mississinawa Valley High School. There, he was president of the local FFA chapter, Student Council president, and a member of the National Honor Society. After graduating in 1979, he attended The Ohio State University and majored in Agricultural Economics, graduating with honors in 1983. After graduation, he worked as an Organization Director for the Ohio Farm Bureau for two years.

From 1986 to 1989, Detling attended the University of Toledo Law School. He had the honor of graduating first in his class, was named the school’s Valedictorian and Outstanding Graduate, and was named to the prestigious legal honorary, Order of the Coif. He was also the Executive Editor of the Toledo Law Review while in school.

After working for a large law firm for four years, Detling returned to Darke County in 1995. He was a partner with the firm of Hanes, Schipfer, Cooper, Graber, Guillozet & Detling, LLC before he opened his own firm in January, 2010.

In January, 2007, Judge McClurg appointed Jim as the Juvenile Court Magistrate, a position he held for over 4 years.

In addition to his professional responsibilities, Detling has been involved in the community and is committed to improving the lives of Darke County citizens. He has or is currently serving on the boards of the YMCA, Wayne Industries, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Red Cross, City of Greenville Civil Service Commission, and the Darke County Law Library Resources Board. He has also served the community as a business law instructor at Edison State Community College.

In 2000, Jim organized the YMCA of Darke County youth swim team and served as its head coach for four years. When he left the program, the team had grown from just a handful of swimmers to one of the more popular youth programs in the county. “I spent a lot of time organizing that team. We had kids from throughout the county, including Greenville, Versailles, Arcanum, Ansonia, Union City, Pitsburg and New Madison. Some of those kids had opportunities to swim in college, and there are a few who furthered their athletic careers in sports other than swimming. When I think of the kids that came through that program and what they are doing now with their schooling and careers, I beam with pride thinking that I was able to help in some small way. I want to be able to use the ability that I have to develop relationships with kids to the Court.

“I believe that my background and experience make me a uniquely qualified candidate. I am fiscally responsible, and will protect the taxpayers’ investment, while at the same time working tirelessly to ensure that the children and adults of Darke County are getting the best bang for their buck. The folks who know me, know that I work very hard and don’t cut corners just to get a task completed. That is the same philosophy I will bring to the Court.”

Detling, the son of Richard and Jeanette Detling of rural Union City, lives in Greenville on Holly Hill Drive, and his two children attend or have attended Greenville City Schools. Daughter Elyse is on leave from Wright State University. She currently serves our country as an Aeromedical Evacuation Technician with the United States Air Force Reserves. Son Andy is a senior at Greenville Senior High School. Jim is also the proud grandfather of Ellie Grosch, to whom Jim is known simply as “papa”.

“I am looking forward to the possibility of serving the citizens of Darke County as their next Juvenile/Probate Court Judge. I am excited about meeting as many folks as I can over these next few months, getting input from them, and communicating my vision for this Court. Unlike many of the other courts, this Court has the opportunity to take a proactive approach toward making a positive difference in a child’s life. I don’t want to be just a Judge behind a bench. I want to develop positive relationships with the kids that come before the court. I believe my experience, leadership ability and work ethic make me an attractive choice when the people of Darke County are finally given an opportunity to choose.“
